Maroota holds a sand deposit in excess of 100 million tonnes. Dixons Maroota quarry is located in an area scheduled under the Sydney Regional Environmental Plan (SREP) no. 9, Extractive Industries (link). It has been declared to be of State Significant Development under the Environmental Planning and Assessment act 1979. The site is also located within the Hawkesbury River corridor and so takes into account the requirements of SREP no. 20 (link).
Local Biodiversity
Maroota is an environmentally extraordinary area, being home to an extremely high level of biological diversity, and unique underground springs that feed the Maroota forest spanning 40,000 hectares. The range of local plant communities in Maroota include:
- Sydney sandstone gully forest
- Maroota sands swamp forest
- Freshwater wetlands
- Wet heath & fernland / sedgeland
- Maroota sandmass forest
- Maroota sands transition scrub
- Sydney sandstone ridgetop
- Low open woodland
- Coastal sandstone heath / open scrub
